Mathieu Matégot was born in Hungary in 1910 and studied at the Budapest School of Fine Arts between 1925 and 1929, before working as a set designer for the theatre. He then travelled to Italy and the United States, before settling in France in 1931. After the liberation, he created a workshop for the creation of furniture with a traditional structure in Paris and became a naturalized French citizen. A precursor of contemporary design, Mathieu MATEGOT likes to work with metal, rattan, glass, wood, Formica, leather and above all perforated sheet metal, of which he was the first user in design. Mathieu MATEGOT is also the inventor of Rigitulle: an openworked sheet metal worked like a fabric thanks to a machine he developed. His aerial creations, many of which have become highly sought-after icons, have an avant-garde and contemporary style, combining organic forms with fluid and light lines. The most striking are the tripod chair Nagasaki, avant-garde with its steel tubes and use of perforated sheeting, the Kangaroo coffee table and the Daedalus shelf.
