The American designer George NELSON was born in the United States in 1908.
Along with Charles & Ray Eames, he is considered the founder of the American modernist movement.
He graduated in architecture from Yale University in 1928 and won the prestigious Prix de Rome the following year.
George NELSON belongs to a generation of architects who, unable to develop numerous projects, turned successfully to interior design and product creation.
Based in Rome, he travelled throughout Europe, meeting many of the pioneers of modernism before returning to the United States to pursue another of his passions: writing.
Among other things, he was instrumental in bringing the work of Gropius, Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier to the United States.
A staunch defender of modernist principles, George NELSON did not make only friends among industrial designers, whom he criticised for making too many concessions to commercial imperatives.
In 1945, he was appointed head of design at Herman Miller and began a series of successful collaborations with Eames, Bertoia, Schultz and Noguchi.
George NELSON's best-known designs include the Marshmallow Sofa and the Coconut Chair.
